What a Good Idea...
* I’ll bet when you first saw this product (if you are female) you thought- What a good idea! And- How come nobody ever thought of this before? Well, that’s a darn good question. Ruby asked the same question as she conducted research for her Ph.D in Clinical Psychology.
Ruby studied the meaning of menstruation- that is, how the culture defines menstruation versus what meaning individual women gave their periods. Ruby did a kind of comparison-contrast, but in the course of doing so, she interviewed 8 women in-depth, and all of them said the same thing; being a bleeding being is messy, and tending to one’s periodic bleeding is time-consuming, inconvenient and ultimately expensive in this culture.
Being a woman herself, Ruby could completely relate and realized that there has never been a product created especially for women, tailored to this situation of regularly producing blood that-- hello-- STAINS!
If Men Bled, the World Would Look Different
* In the course of her research Ruby read a famous but profound and interesting essay by Gloria Steinem on the topic of women and menstruation in the culture who said in part that if men menstruated, we would all get a week off from work every month, and how much one bleeds would be a sign of superiority. In other words, if men bled, menstruating would be catered to in this culture and thoroughly accommodated. Ruby expanded on that theory and realized that if men bled, there would have already been 100 products on the market for the easy removal of blood, right? Right. AT LEAST one-hundred.
